Persistent Urachus

A 4 year old boy with persistent foul smelling umbilical discharge was brought in to see me for a further opinion. He had been to several GPs and Paediatricians over the last 3.5 years, and had received conservative treatment and reassurance.
Physical examination revealed that he had foul smelling, purulent discharge from his Umblicus and a palpable mass below the Umblicus.
An ultrasound revealed a cystic mass filled with debris and therefore clinically and radiologically a diagnosis of a Persistent Urachal remnant was made.
He underwent successful Laparoscopic Resection of the mass and its persistent tracts following which he recovered completely.
